The multiple-award-winning Settlers of Catan is a wonderful game that perfectly balances luck and strategy, ensuring both old-hands and newcomers alike can win. Released back in 1995, it is now one of the most popular games in the world, lauded as ‘the board game of our time’ by the Washington Post . Not only is play swift, player interaction high, and the victory conditions delicately balanced, but the use of a randomly generated game-board ensures play is always fresh.



Players assume the role of a community of settlers attempting to tame the remote, resource-rich island of Catan. Each player aquires and trades resources to build structures on the island such as roads, settlements, and cities. Points are awarded for building the largest community, and the first player to score the correct number of points wins.



Like all the best games, the rules are simple, but the application of the rules allows for many different strategies. The game normally takes about an hour, an hour-and-a-half tops, to play, and, as there is much player-interaction involved when trading, it makes a great game to break the ice with new friends.



Although designed for 3-4 players, can be played with only 2 players without modification, though it is arguably less satisfying as a game. It can also accommodate 5-6 players, but a further expansion is required for this.
