After failing miserably at a few cryptic crosswords in magazines recently, I thought I would search out some more general knowledge based questions - i.e. ones I stood a fighting chance of answering.

I decided to download Crossword Unlimited, a free app for Android, and was very pleased with what I got.



It is the ultimate customisable crossword, where you can choose to play exactly how you want. For example, I often find myself stuck on questions asking things about topics I know nothing about, but here, you can choose which questions they will be limited to.



You can also decide how tough you want the clues to be, and how many words you have to find, by altering the size of the grid.



Another frustration I usually come across in quiz apps, is that they are biased towards an American audience, but here you can choose between a UK or US spelling, and the questions are geared to whichever country you are from.

If you're not sure on a word, then you can check to see whether it is correct or not; if you're wrong, you get a penalty added to your time.

Although you do not need an internet connection to play, if you are connected then, you can also look up the meaning or history of one of the answers, which is great, because sometimes crosswords peak your interest, and make you want to learn more about certain things.

If you are a fan of crosswords, then I definitely recommend it, unless of course you prefer cryptic clues, as you won't find any of those here.
